Have you tried Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory? It’s so great that Quake Wars were made based on its gameplay. Check out

There’s two team to choose; Allied and Axis and each team have 5 different class such as soldier, medic, engineer, field ops and covert ops. Each have their own special set of weapon and importance to every map in order to win a round. With each killed enemy, revived or healed team member, you’ll get a certain amount of experience that will rise you from private to a higher ranking soldier and class bonuses.

There are bots for this game but I suggest ADSL internet connection or better for online multiplayer.

To play this game you will need at least:
600 MHz CPU, 128 MB RAM, 32 MB OpenGL graphics card, 56.6k Modem/LAN

Operating systems supported:
GNU/Linux, Mac OS X and Windows.

Downloads can be found from http://www.splashdamage.com/node/57

Then there’s these guys who made funny video about the game :)

Contribute to Free Software games

Free software projects need volunteers to make it better. Especially its games. One that I can think of is Quake2World which isn’t released yet due to the lack of helping hands. Watch its video first and you’ll know how promising it is.

Many things you can contribute to the project like maintaining its codes, graphics, audio and stuff. In return, you can have your name on the games credits section. It’s a kind of a portfolio too you know.

There’s so many game related free software projects that you can find and contribute at http://directory.fsf.org/category/games/

Frags with color!

I’m just playing with words. Let me introduce World of Padman, another FPS made with Quake 3 engine like no other. Its cartoon-ish feel and look may fool you. Those bots are tough! Have a look.

It’s a Free Software, so just download it and have fun. This one you still cannot play with your little brother and sister despite its colorful appearance. If you watched the video, you’ll know what I mean.

According to Wikipedia, you’ll need a system (Linux, Mac OS X or Windows) with:
1 GHz Processor
512MB RAM
600MB Hard Disk Space
128MB OpenGL Video Card

Download links can be found from http://padworld.myexp.de/index.php?files
